HPLC vs Mass Spectrometry: How Research Peptides Are Verified

When a research peptide is characterised, two questions matter above all: how pure is it, and is it the compound it claims to be? Two industry-standard techniques answer those questions.

HPLC — measuring purity

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography separates a sample into its individual components as they pass through a column at different rates. The result is a chromatogram showing what proportion of the sample is the target peptide versus impurities — the purity percentage you see on a Certificate of Analysis. For tested batches we target ≥99% purity.

Mass spectrometry — confirming identity

Mass spectrometry measures the molecular weight of the compound. Matching the measured mass to the expected value confirms the peptide’s identity. HPLC alone tells you how pure a sample is; mass spectrometry tells you whether it is the right molecule in the first place.
